Offical Lore

In 2027 a mysterious viral epidemic known as the ‘Crossout’ swept the planet, countries and populations simultaneously began to fall at an alarming rate all over the Earth. Those who did not die in the first few days, were plagued by hallucinations and headaches, many people went mad and committed suicide. The source of the disease could not be detected but the cities that were once the vibrant social and economic beacons of humanity were left ravaged and deserted.

The media speculated on several possibilities concerning the nature of the disease. Some argued that radiation of cellphones and televisions was infected with a new synthetically engineered virus created by terrorists. Others thought that a virus corrupted the atmosphere following an impact of a large meteorite. Was this an evolutionary leap and the dawn of new humanity?

Many tried to escape the effects of the virus by using different protective measures: they wore face masks to filter the air and completely stopped using electronic devices in favour of more traditional means of communication. But it was all in vain: in just a few days what was once an epidemic became a pandemic unlike anyone had ever seen on such a global scale.

Survivors gradually began to change — after fifteen years of transformation, the changes became visible. The most noticeable metamorphosis occurred in the eyes of the affected — some began to glow, while others resembled black holes. To hide their unnatural looks and conceal the mutation, people started wearing padded clothing and sunglasses.

More than twenty years have passed since Crossout. Humans still remember their life before the disaster. As always, there are groups trying to recover the old world, while others enjoy the chaos and destruction. But there are those who are not human any more. They hide their faces behind masks, and their motives are unknown.

Not everyone in this world strives for chaos and destruction. There are also people who want to preserve our knowledge of the past, and the scouts from the Order of the Fallen Star are such people. These excellently armed and mobile solo soldiers have dedicated their lives to searching for artifacts and carriers of information of all kinds. No one knows where the Starburnts take the artifacts they find or why, but the curious Scar AB will pay decent money for any containers bearing their logo. New pieces are added to his artifact collection on a regular basis—the Wastelands hide danger for even the most battle-hardened veterans, after all. Scar AB is afraid that one day the Order will come for their artifacts, so his collection remains hidden. But on special occasions he puts up several well-protected exhibits for public viewing.

Folder With Documents

Artifact A0 This folder bearing the Starburnts logo was discovered behind a panel during the disassembly of an unremarkable old truck that was abandoned by the side of the road not far from Central. No one has been able to track its history, although Scar AB has offered a reward for it.
Newspaper “The Moon” Artifact A1 UFO CRASHES WITHIN NEAR EAST COMBAT ZONE. According to information from our sources, the testing of a new anti-air system based on technology developed in a closed US Air Force facility led to unexpected results: an unknown flying object was detected, attacked, and shot down. Our expert shares his opinion. Continued on pg. 2.
Magazine “Popular Science” Artifact A2 Dr. Weckler, a representative of the Waderkvarn Corporation, presented the scientific community with the results of a series of practical experiments that cast doubt on modern theoretical physics. These experiments involve, among other things, force fields and certain types of radiation. What consequences could this have for science? Let’s try to work it out together...
Advertising Pamphlet Waderkvarn Artifact A3 Speed. Power. Reliability. Our new weapons systems are the embodiment of these principles. The discoveries made during the last decade have allowed us to fundamentally reevaluate the principles behind the construction of modern weaponry—and Waderkvarn is on the bleeding edge of progress in this field!
Yellowed Piece Of Paper, 2027 Artifact A4 REMAIN CALM! Due to incidents of mass psychosis of an unknown nature, all populated areas of over 100,000 people will be subject to curfew. Today I saw the bottom of the ocean from my window. Something’s happened to the water — the ocean has pulled all the way back to the horizon. I don’t know what to do. Could this really be the end?
Note Fragment Artifact A7 The Necropolis anomaly has dispersed. Assemble an expedition. Instructor. P.S. don’t tell Ivy.

Fireproof Container

Artifact B0 One night the inhabitants of Rock City heard explosions and saw a blinding flash that lit up the horizon. Judging from the tracks, an entire squadron of raiders attacked the vehicle of an Order soldier. There were no survivors. There were spots where the scorched earth had been transformed into glass. A container of artifacts was found inside one of these pieces of glass.
Magazine “Popular Science” Artifact B1 The SEER (Southern European Evolutionary Research Initiative) computing complex will be not only the world’s most powerful device, performing millions of operations per second, but will also serve as the basis for the deployment of a global analytics center that will process information, make predictions, and perform scientific calculations.
Homemade Pamphlet Artifact B2 Don’t believe the lies! The government is lying to you! Nothing can save you from Crossout—not gas masks, not hermetically sealed bunkers, not even hazmat suits!
Propaganda Poster Artifact B3 The air is infected! Our country has been attacked by an unknown aggressor. Poisonous substances have been dispersed in certain regions. The most reliable way to protect yourself is to wear a gas mask. However, try to avoid spending too much time in location infected by poisonous substances, and refrain from contact with people who have been affected by these substances.
Video Diary By An Unknown Blogger Artifact B4 This year… 2027. It’s coming to an end. I think it must be the 20th or the 21st of December by now, but I’m not sure. The world has changed. People have changed. Climate, geography… it’s all gone downhill... I don’t know how many people have survived, how many have been saved... how many have turned... the cities are dead.
A Voice Recording Of The Sheriff Artifact B5 It’s been over 20 years since the Cataclysm. Our town has become a sanctuary for many, but its time is coming to an end. We’re surrounded by too many predators — the Brotherhood, the Kaganate, and raiders big and small. Now we’ve started hearing rumors of a group called the Engineers, and they’ve got no mercy for anyone. We have a choice: we can either fight or join one of them. I’m not sure which option is worse.

Black Crate

Artifact C0 This blackened wooden crate permeated with some kind of sap-like substance was dragged from an acid lake next to a tree with the Starburnt logo scratched into it. A sealed glass sphere containing several carefully packed artifacts was found inside.
Report From The US Air Force Science And Technology Center Artifact C1 5/1/1947. Secret. Report on incident 00213/22-1. The object entered Earth’s atmosphere at 4:04 AM EST on 2/20/1947. Once the nature of the object had been confirmed in accordance with US Air Force internal instructions the Veil Plan was initiated. The crash site was isolated, and explanations were provided to witnesses. According to the findings of a scientific committee made up of leading experts from the University of California, the incident was natural in origin and precipitated by a collision between two extraterrestrial bodies at the edge of Earth’s atmosphere.
Internal Waderkvarn Presentation Artifact C2 The area around the fallen object is transforming. An effect of an unknown nature is increasing the rate at which all materials decay. This includes metals, minerals, and polymers. Personnel within the proximity of the object have been experiencing sudden bouts of anxiety, and particularly sensitive individuals have suffered panic attacks. The gathering of new samples has been rendered significantly more difficult. In connection with this I recommend...

Travel Journals Of The First Waderkvarn Expedition Artifact C5 Management has given us a task — reach the SEER terminal. Our path will take us through lands in the grip of madness. Groups fighting for the last remaining resources. Raiders who kill anyone they see. And, of course, a new landscape and new geography. All of this awaits us beyond the threshold of the Waderkvarn shelter. We knew this day would come sooner or later. There’s a reason they call the SEER project the “Oracle.” We need to understand what’s happening to the world and to people. We need to upload all of the information we currently have to SEER. And get an answers. At any price.
